Where to Go, and Why, this September
Article by
Duncan Greenfield-Turk
September is universally known as a month of change. In the north, summer fades into autumn’s golden light, while in the south, spring bursts into bloom. Across the equator, the climate remains steady, yet festivals and cultural traditions bring the season its own rhythm and sense of celebration.

For queer travellers, September is a golden window with vibrant destinations, fewer crowds, and often better value. Here's our guide for where to go, and why, every September.
Up North
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona in September is all about vibrant, full-flowing life. The city’s beaches are still buzzing, the heat has softened to more manageable heights, and festivals light up the streets everywhere you go.

The Festa Major de la Mercè, held toward the end of September, fills the city with concerts, parades, and near-constant firework displays. The LGBTQ+ scene remains one of the most open in Europe, centred around the Eixample district, where queer-owned bars and clubs welcome locals and visitors alike.
Combine Gaudí’s architectural allure, the slow pleasures of Mediterranean dining, and sunlit beaches, and you’ll find this is one of the finest moments to savour this Spanish gem.

If you’re looking to visit Barcelona, we couldn’t recommend staying in the Eixample district enough. The Alamanac Barcelona embraces the area with its contemporary yet sophisticated appeal and allows for the perfect base to explore the district and the greater city.
Montreal, Canada
Canada’s most cosmopolitan French-speaking city comes alive in September with the early fall colours. The summer crowds have thinned, but the city retains a thrumming heartbeat for exploration and cultural exchange.

The city’s gay village, anchored along Sainte-Catherine Street, is one of the largest in North America. Cafés, galleries, and nightlife here make it a hub of inclusivity. September also offers a smorgasbord of festivals, from Pop Montreal celebrating indie music to MAPP Montreal lighting the city with digital art projections and many more.

Montreal is a fashion-forward city, so basing yourself in the shopping district allows you the chance to embrace the cultural heart of the city. Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is a firm favourite, keeping a sophisticated palette while ensuring you never want for any modern amenities.
For those seeking the countryside in all its autumn splendour, Manoir Hovey is the perfect escape. Just 75 minutes from Montreal, this historic lakeside Relais & Châteaux retreat weaves old-world charm with refined modern luxury, offering an experience that feels both elegant and timeless.

Berlin, Germany
Berlin is a perennial queer favourite, and September can only be described as the perfect month to visit.

Warm, long days linger, yet the nightlife sharpens into a season of underground parties, art events, and theatre. Berlin Art Week takes centre stage during the middle of the month, showcasing the city’s contemporary edge.
Queer travellers will find one of the most progressive and diverse LGBTQ+ communities in the world, with legendary clubs like SchwuZ and Berghain drawing international crowds. Beyond nightlife, Berlin in September offers beer gardens, cycling through Tiergarten as the leaves begin to turn, and a cultural calendar that can only be described as boundless.

Berlin might be calling, and, if it is, you can’t go too wrong staying at The Ritz-Carlton for that quintessential luxurious experience, or, if you’re looking for something a little more intimate but situated on one of TimeOut’s 30 coolest streets, the Orania.Berlin.

Down South
Sydney, Australia
September marks the beginning of spring in Sydney and brings with it glimpses of the long summer months ahead.

Bondi Beach starts to come alive with swimmers and surfers, while the Royal Botanic Garden blooms in every colour of the rainbow. For queer travellers, Sydney offers a strong foundation of LGBTQ+ inclusivity year-round, anchored by Oxford Street and its iconic nightlife.
September is also the start of the outdoor event and art festival season. It's an ideal month for those who want to combine cosmopolitan culture with coastal comforts.

If September in Sydney really speaks to you, picking where to stay becomes a serious conundrum. The city, and its surrounds, hosts a plethora of options, but a few of our favourites include the newly opened Capella Sydney in the uptown CBD area of Circular Quay or The Langham, Sydney, in Miller’s Point.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is a seasonal city, and September brings spring across the Cape Peninsula. Table Mountain is fringed with wildflowers, vineyards in Stellenbosch awaken, and whale-watching along the coast reaches its peak.

For LGBTQ+ travellers, De Waterkant remains the hub of nightlife and community, with welcoming bars, cafés, and boutiques. The city’s natural beauty is matched by a strong culture of inclusivity that makes it one of the most progressive urban centres in Africa.

September marks the start of a time where the outdoors beckons and all the allure of Cape Town begins to flower. If you’re looking to stay close to the city, Mount Nelson, a Belmond Hotel is an easy choice. Nestled within a leafy expanse close to all the city offers, it’s the perfect place to escape within the city.
If you’re looking to be on the Atlantic Seaboard, Ellerman House in Bantry Bay offers you an exclusive urban retreat that only a member of the Relais & Chateaux family can offer.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
September is the first full month of spring in Buenos Aires, making it a perfect time to stroll the wide boulevards, explore leafy neighbourhoods like Palermo, and savour their unique, colourful café culture.

The city’s queer nightlife, centred around Palermo and San Telmo, is as stylish as it is welcoming. The capital city is a cultural hub with everything from tango performances to contemporary art museums all within easy reach.
September’s mild weather makes the city a joy to explore by day, before slipping into its famously late-night rhythms.

If you’re looking for sophisticated luxury while exploring the city, look no further than The Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires or the Park Hyatt’s Palacio Duhau. Both are situated in the Recoleta district, giving you easy access to everything the city has to offer but also allowing you a luxurious escape should you need it.

Somewhere in the middle
Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City is an equatorial treasure during the month of September. While the rainy season gently lingers, showers are brief and often followed by sunshine.

The city buzzes with cultural energy, from Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul to the grand murals of Diego Rivera. The LGBTQ+ neighbourhood of Zona Rosa remains a hub for nightlife and community, while Condesa and Roma bring cafés, boutiques, and inclusive creative spaces.
September also brings national pride, where Mexico’s Independence Day on the 16th turns the city into a festival of lights, parades, and music, where queer travellers can enjoy welcoming spaces throughout the capital.

If you’re looking to experience the best of Mexico City, book a stay at the Sofitel Mexico CIty Reforma where Michelin-starred cuisine and French sophistication add extra layers of luxury to an already exquisite experience.
Bangkok, Thailand
September in Bangkok can be a little humid, but the cultural experiences more than make up for it. The LGBTQ+ scene is deeply embedded in the city’s fabric, with Silom’s bars and clubs offer something truly unique.

The month also provides a genuine respite from the crowds, making cultural landmarks like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho much easier to explore. September is also a time of festivals, with the Vegetarian Festival beginning in late September or early October, filling the city with parades and street food markets.
If you want to experience authentic Bangkok without the crowds, booking at the Aman Nai Lert Bangkok will give you a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This unique property combines Aman’s sense of tranquillity within the rhythm of the city, all while being embraced by a verdant secret garden.

San Juan, Puerto Rico
Reader beware, September is technically hurricane season in the Caribbean, but Puerto Rico does offer a quieter beach experience and excellent value for luxury stays in one of the jewels of the area.

San Juan’s Condado district is home to LGBTQ+-friendly hotels, while La Placita de Santurce offers a mix of nightlife with a little bit of something for everyone.

Beyond the city, rainforests, bioluminescent bays, coastal drives, and unparalleled diving experiences await anyone willing to explore a little further afield. Deciding where to stay in Puerto Rico must be one of life’s most difficult decisions.
If you’re looking to stay in the Rio Grande area, The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort would be top of our list. Maybe you’re looking to stay closer to Carolina, then the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel might just be our favourite. Or perhaps you are looking to stay around Dorado, then the Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, would be a great choice. As we said, this might be one of the most difficult, yet truly fantastic, decisions you’ve ever had to make!
